Memory, with music: Guitar Fest raises money for Alzheimer's Association
Reyna Lehker cherishes the memories of her childhood in a house full of singing and dancing.
She recalls the joy that laughter, song and the gentle soothing sound of the guitar would bring to her mother's soul.
"She was a beautiful person," Lehker said. "She was very patient and caring. Everything about her was special. She always enjoyed our singing, even if it sounded terrible."
That's how Lehker prefers to remember her mother, who died Jan. 6, 2010, after a battle with Alzheimer's disease.
"That's my birthday," Lehker said, unable to hold back her tears. "She was suffering so much, I asked God -- if he wanted to give me a gift -- I asked him to please stop my mom's suffering."
An estimated 5.4 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's. In Texas, about 350,000 people are affected by the disease, according to the Alzheimer's Association.
In honor of her mother, Lehker and Nellie Lopez are co-producing an event they're calling Guitar Fest. Armin Harrison, Glenn
