The only major change to the Les Paul Standard in 1959 was the addition of wider, fatter jumbo frets, which facilitated more dramatic bends. The real force of this change was not felt until the late 1960s, when rock and blues players like Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield and Peter Green began to discover the fat, warm voice of the 59 Standard. This moment in history marked the beginning of the idealization of the 59 Les Paul as the Holy Grail of guitars in the minds of professionals, collectors and weekend warriors. The Gibson VOS 59 Les Paul Standard offers you this guitar made to the Vintage Original Spec. VOS Finishing Process Explained: VOS stands for Vintage Original Spec. The finishing process on VOS models has been customised to reflect the way Gibson finished Les Paul guitars back in the '50s. They receive a thinner nitro-cellulose lacquer finish which is applied, sanded, and buffed by hand; in other words, more care is put into the finishing process. This extra care is intended to make VOS guitars look like gently aged and well-cared-for vintage guitars. It also helps the guitars 'breathe' better and therefore to resonate and sustain more freely, making them much better instruments. Moderne Times: The Triumphant Return of the Gibson Moderne
The Moderne is the great lost Gibson guitar. Shrouded in mystery and myth, its story has been passed around in dimly lit bars, cluttered music stores and thronging NAMM Show floors for almost six decades now. It’s elusive and desirable, partly due to its unique styling and partly due to its sheer unattainability for so many years. That’s all about to change (the scarcity, anyway: the Moderne will remain as freaky-cool as ever). But more on that in a moment. First, let’s backtrack.
The Moderne was designed by Gibson in the 1950s, after then-president Ted McCarty commissioned three radical new designs to beef up the company’s solid body offering with some more futuristic models. Legend has it that some unflattering comments about the company’s solid body lineup made their way to him from a guitar company on the west coast. Having already produced game-changing, semi-hollow electric guitars and humbucker pickups, McCarty and Co. seemed to see this as a challenge rather than an insult, and the team went to work.
