All Right Now: Remembering Guitar Great, Free's Paul Kossoff

Best known for his sterling work on Free’s classic “All Right Now,” Paul Kossoff was one of Britain’s finest blues guitarists, destined to join the hallowed ranks of Clapton, Beck and Page if he hadn’t passed away at the tender age of 25 in 1976.

His impact on fellow guitar players was immense. Brian May of Queen was heavily influenced by Kossoff’s technique and feel. “In the early days of Queen, we loved the music of Free, and frequently played their songs in sound checks, and at home for fun,” May said. “Kossoff was the epitome of cool. Influence me? Ha! I would say the riff of ‘Hammer to Fall’ is not a million miles away from Kossoff!” Eric Clapton, at the peak of his “God”-like powers, even asked Kossoff to demonstrate his vibrato for him.

Paul Kossoff had a unique take on the blues-rock movement coming out of England, especially the masterful vibrato work he often would weave into his music. Kossoff’s tone was purely ’59 burst. From the infamous “All Right Now” to his work with Back Street Crawler and across a sizeable amount of session work, an original 1959 Les Paul sunburst was his constant companion.
