We rented a house in Bel-Air and the debauchery up there was unbelievable.” As legend has it, “Snowblind” had to be re-rerecorded because the original take featured Osbourne screaming the word “cocaine” after each verse. Ward’s take on the sessions: “I can see it as a turning point for me, where the alcohol and drugs stopped being fun.” Nonetheless, Iommi, in particular, kept stretching the band’s sound in different directions. “Changes” added a more fully realized, even orchestral, arrangement to the Black Sabbath catalog. Although Iommi had rapidly earned a reputation as one of hard rock’s most aggressive and demonically toned players, he composed the number as a piano and mellotron ballad.
