Kalamazoo Fretboard Festival offers a wide range of stringed instrument ...

Ever since Orville Gibson started his mandolin and guitar company here in 1896, Kalamazoo has been a city steeped in musical heritage. This weekend, the Kalamazoo Valley Museum seeks to celebrate that rich history, as they present the seventh annual Fretboard Festival.

The festival will kick off on Friday evening at 7 p.m., with a performance by local Americana quintet Ninth Street Bridge, and will extend into Saturday. The proper festival lasts from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and admission is free for all events.

This year’s festival will feature the customary mix of overlapping musical performances and workshop presentations that span a wide range of stringed instrument sounds and topics. According to the museum’s website, the bands and artists range from folk to bluegrass to jazz, while the workshops will cover everything from the upright bass to slide and lap steel guitars. Elspeth Inglis, the Assistant Director for Events at the museum, explained how the event has evolved over the years.

I felt that guitars and guitarists needed a hall of fame, there's a hall of fame for everything else, it seems. There's a hall of fame for Delta blues, and Stax, but it's kind of regional. I want to see something that is all-inclusive.
