It was great! I had wanted to work with Butch for years. For five years, we have discussed doing something together, and we wanted to, but it was hard to get around to doing it. So, finally on this album, we did it, and that was one of the big wins for me, that I was finally getting this opportunity to work with Butch. He and I are a lot more similar, musically, than people would think; just the types of music we’re into and the way we hear things. I thought he did an incredible job on this album… Butch is a fantastic musician, and he kicks it.
What was the writing and recording process like for this album? This is the first time you co-wrote with other musicians, right?
Yes! Honestly, it was so inspiring writing with other people. These are really great writers, and you want to make sure that when they walk out of that room, that they go, “That was cool. I really enjoyed that experience with Gavin.” You both want to feel that way. Also, writing with someone else allows you to continue to be inspired. When you’re writing alone, a lot of times you hit that wall, but when you’re writing with someone else, they can suggest how to get around that wall.
