In 2007 Ibanez introduced the world's first production 8-string electric guitar, the RG Prestige RG2228. While Ibanez and other companies (notably Conklin and Novak) had offered custom-order 8-string electrics to a wide variety of metal, experimental, and jazz players prior to it, the launch of the RG2228 signaled the instrument's particular growing popularity among metal players yearning for ever-lower ranges of distorted shredding and palm-muted riffage. Perhaps the most notable groups to make the RS2228 an integral part of their arsenal were Swedish metal experimenters Meshuggah and L.A.-based industrial/grindcore heroes Fear Factory.
Since the release of the RG2228 companies like ESP and Schecter have added 8-string models to their production lines—a testament to the growing acceptance of ultra-extended-range instruments among metal players. With the 2010 release of the Ibanez RGA8 ($799 US retail), investing in low-register mayhem requires an even-lower buy-in price. So what do you get for the cost of $100-per-string?
