At 60, time is impossible to save anymore

It’s a small world.

Unless you have to paint it.

Old joke. But it comes to mind when I’m alone listening to the ticking of our old wind-up clock.

Time’s an illusion.

Unless you’re closing in on 60. Then it’s stone-cold real.

After my dog died a few years ago, it hit me hard. My son prodded me to get another, sending me photos of litters, offering a puppy as a gift. I finally confessed I couldn’t bear to go through it again. He said, “Look, at your age, it could be the dog having to deal with it.”

Thanks, son.

He just turned 30, the age I was when he was born. I’ve learned a few things since, mostly in the category of what-not-to-do. But where’s that wisdom I heard about?

Two of my better decisions were made in my 20s. I got my wife and a Guild guitar. I’ve had a dozen guitars since, but not one as sweet as that old flattop.

I’ve only had the one wife, but that’s all it took to know she has an essential quality I need: She can put up with me.
