Schoenhut adds guitars to its toy/student piano product line
It’s the Schoenhut Piano Company , but the venerable ("since 1872") toy piano manufacturer used its grand Toy Fair 2012 display space to promote a new series of acoustic guitars--along with its traditional keyboard-based toy and children's music instrument product.
"Every kid gets a guitar at some point in his life," says Schoenhut's Leonard Trinca, who co-owns the company with his wife Renee.
"Generally, it looks like a guitar--but it's not really a guitar," he continues. "The finish is shoddy, the frets aren't in the right place, etc. We wanted to get into guitars--but make a real student guitar."
So Trinca went to the annual NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) music product trade show in Anaheim, Calif., and studied the guitars.
"A guy showed me a $5,000 guitar and explained that the back was composite shaped with a dual curve, and had a glued-on soundboard made of wood," says Trinca. "It was a great-sounding guitar, and really beautiful. So I went home and put my thinking cap on: I made a mold, glued on a basic soundboard, added a hardwood neck with a molded fretboard and proper spacing between frets. Everything was great, and several guitar teachers said it was a heck of a neat little guitar."
