Marc Hansen, Mendocino County blues musician, dies at 59

He was a songwriter, yurt-builder and promoter of alternative education.

He died Feb. 14 in a car crash in Crescent, Ore., which also killed his sister, Elise Hansen of Massachusetts.

He was 59.

“My dad brought lots of joy to everyone through his music,” said his daughter, Karissa Carpenter of Bend, Ore. “He was full of love and light.”

He was born in San Francisco, where his father was a professor at San Francisco State University and his mother hosted a TV dance show for teens.

He learned to play guitar and went to school in Napa, where he performed at school dances and sock hops. Hansen moved to New England in the late 1960s, where he met David Raitt, brother of blues guitarist and singer Bonnie Raitt and son of Broadway legend John Raitt.

Hansen & Raitt sang and played acoustic guitar at colleges and coffeehouses throughout the northeast and helped start an alternative high school in Maine.

They also learned to build yurts, round wood-and-fabric structures originally used in Mongolia.

Fleet Foxes
Fleet Foxes
With little more than a sole acoustic guitar and billowing harmonies, the dramatically arranged opener “Montezuma” creates a rhapsodic mood that sets a tone for an album that, like Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, captures the precarious mood of our times

Timeless music from ageless Hot Tuna
Hot Tuna opened the 90-minute second set in a stripped down quartet, minus Campbell and Williams, as Kaukonen's acoustic guitar drove an evocative “I See the Light.” It wasn't long before the rocking energy of the new material was back, however,

Concert Review: Iron and Wine at House of Blues
Concert Review: Iron and Wine at House of Blues
earlier this year, Iron and Wine turned their hushed, acoustic sound into a jazzy big band that filled House of Blues. The new album definitely had something to do with that, as the ambitious record makes modest use of horns and electric guitar.

Global Beat Fusion: African Guitar Gods and a Little Bit of Marley
"Tabsakh Dalet" represents the more subdued acoustic side of Bombino, but still captures the magic of his sound. Likewise, the man is featured as Group Bombino in the Guitars From Agadez series (Sublime Frequencies), with a few of the songs from here

Cream of the crop
He received a £14 acoustic guitar for his 14th birthday, then proceeded to copy the great blues guitarists note for note. His first band was the Roosters, a local R&B group that included Tom McGuinness, a future member of Manfred Mann, and latterly
